You gotta, gotta, go straight.
When you touch a free spinning object, such as a bicycle wheel, top, etc., the friction of the touch slows the object's rotation. The same thing happens to your racer. The more times its tires bang into the center rail (see middle car in example below) the slower your car will travel. Your car will always travel faster if it runs straight and doesn't contact the rail of the track. Note how straight the car on the right travels.
